Weekend Link Love {Valentine's Edition}

Hello lovelies, and happy Valentine's weekend! I'm spending the weekend doing a stay-cation of sorts with Eric. We're hopping on the metro for a mini-getaway in nearby Old Town Alexandria, for some exploring, dining and a stay and spa visit at the Vicente Wolf designed Lorien Hotel.

I'm so excited for a little break from real life without the hassle of travel, BUT, if you're hanging around this weekend, I've got more than a few ideas for you.

Valentine's Day always seems a bit misplaced to me, here in the winter wasteland that is February....the deep reds and pinks, men toting fresh bouquets, bare-legged women willing to brave goosebumps for an epic dress. What is a holiday like this doing in winter??

That said, we can all agree that a little burst of spring is exactly what we need this time of year. And that's why I love the idea of a spring-inspired wedding in the dead of winter. Imagine it hosted under a glass roof with evergreens and a canopy of stars overhead, dozens of shaded chandeliers glittering. Neruda poems read, a wispy lace dress and an ombre layered cake in shades of pink and cherry. Perfect.

Love: Viva Terra "Tree" Bed

I typically prefer upholstered beds, but the soft, organic curves of this iron bed from Viva Terra are instantly soothing to me. It reminds me of the whole concept of "setting down roots" -- letting yourself be in one place for a while, without reaching and striving to move. The idea being that, like a tree, the act of not moving allows for the most growth.

So zen, right? :)

This snapshot of my living room couch sums up this restful little weekend perfectly...plenty of downtime-- reading, thinking, napping and yoga, paired with two dinners with some of my favorite people.

I'll be rounding out my Sunday enjoying the glorious counter-programming for the Superbowl. Right now, Stealing Beauty, one of my favorite vacations-in-a-movie is airing on HBO. Afterwards, I'll be escaping into the orderly world of Downton Abbey.

Weekend Link Love

As a hopeless sap, I can't help but love the run-up to Valentine's day...not the Hallmark version of the holiday -- thoughtless cards, supermarket red roses and Russell Stover-- but a more authentic take. Think: Handmade chocolates, hand-written letters and artful flower arrangements. (You'll be seeing lots more of this here in the coming weeks.)

Saipua's arrangements are always the gold standard for me. If you haven't heard of this flower shop, or haven't visited in a while, Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to check in.

Last week's photography class at fifteen/eleven was super-inspiring, and I can't wait to share some of what I've learned. As such, I've been kind of a photography nerd this week -- learning more about how to take beautiful photos, and equally important, how to edit them.

That's why I'm in love with this adorable photo of matchsticks photoshopped into hearts. They look so real, I'll cop to being kind of disappointed that you can't buy them anywhere! (Because I'm totally crazy enough to waste money on heart-shaped matches).

Happy weekend! I'm quite looking forward to a very bloggy weekend ahead, starting with a Fifteen Eleven photography workshop today, and ending with a local blogger brunch and yoga session. As I'm packing up my gear to head to the workshop in Old Town Alexandria, I've suddenly realized the one thing I'm missing is a camera strap. Dang. Inspiration 1.18 {Well Traveled}

I've been obsessing over this Garance Dore post about Piper Perabo's apartment since the weekend. So much so, that I decided to try and paint my apartment all in one day to get a similarly airy feeling. Crazy, I know, and needless to say two of my walls remain unfinished. I now have the living room equivalent of a Batman villain.

Anywho, I try not to repost another blogger's work so soon after it was published, but I just couldn't resist sharing this in depth! Isn't it the perfect mix of cool, and glam and interesting? Also, that fireplace. I would name my firstborn Piper for that fireplace.

I'm clearly just jealous...

{Project Resolve} Put in in Writing + Template!

According to life coach Lauree Ostrofsky of Simply Leap, one of the keys to actually succeeding at your resolutions is putting them in writing and keeping them some place you'll look every day. Of course, nobody wants to look at scribbled writing on a post-it note-- exactly where my resolutions were jotted down before--so I went ahead and created the image above.

I thought I'd let all of you guys in on the fun with the template below. Just print it on high-quality paper, jot down your resolutions and keep them close at hand.

A few other tips that I applied to my resolutions:

Focus more on actions than outcomes. For example, my yoga goal could have said, "Look like Miranda Kerr by end-of-year." Ha! Outcomes are too often unattainable. Actions are.
Put a number behind your goals. I tried to avoid the "once-a-month," "once-a-week" thing. Sometimes you're just too darn busy. That's no reason to get defeated. Nice round numbers give you the opportunity to make up lost time.
Focus on stuff that makes you happy and enriches your life. Think about doing more of what you love instead of less of anything.

Project Resolve: Finding Zen at Work

So here's a little story for you, kids. Today was my first day at work in 2012. Despite a metric ton of magical thinking that the past three days had transformed me into a zen-like efficiency master, I had a day as hellish as any in the past. Granted, this is typically one of the busiest times of year for me, but, woof, this was a rough one.

After a bout of insomnia, I dragged myself out of bed a half hour later than my ideal wake-up time. I turned on a favorite Pandora station and hopped in the shower. What felt like less than 10 minutes was actually 20. The clock read 8:35. With my admittedly delightful 10-minute commute, this meant that I had 15 minutes to get ready. I ended up arriving ten minutes late, out of breath and sans makeup. This was not a good look.

I brought an avocado for breakfast, but didn't take the time to eat it. It became my lunch. By 4 I was skulking around the office kitchen searching for unwanted baked goods. Between the lack of sleep and food, and general stress, I'm pretty sure I stopped speaking English around 5. Actually, that's a fact. Ask my colleagues.

Which brings me to New Year's Resolution #1. Find zen at work. To help guide myself along the way, I created these handly little reminders above and below. I hope you find them helpful too, and be on the lookout for more as I set my 2012 resolutions! In the meantime, I'd love to know what tips and tricks you would add!

There are few entertaining opportunities as decoratively thrilling as New Year's Eve. I love the idea of greeting the new year with a homemade tinsel banner, glittering pom pom stirrers or a ripe blackberry in bubbly champagne. Take it a step further with simple craft-paper wrapped parting gifts, tied with a sparkling ribbon, or glimmering ice lanterns lighting the way to the festivities.

Inspiration 12.22 {Breathe Deep}

Today's inspiration: Welcome guests (or escape from them) with this simple bathroom tip. Tie a sprig of fresh eucalpytus to the shower curtain or showerhead. As the bathroom fills with steam, the eucalpytus releases its invigorating scent. Instant spa for about five bucks at Whole Foods.

I just tried this last week, and my boyfriend LOVED it. And this is someone who generally thinks everything I do for the sake of design is borderline insane. If you try it, let me know what you think!

Inspiration 12.13 {Focus}

If you flip back far enough in this blog, you'll see that I was once a girl who loved excess -- crazy pattern combos, jewel box rooms and busy tableaux. But, as the years went on, something changed that. Maybe it was a hectic work life or the constraints of apartment living, or just some semblance of maturity, but today I'll take homey minimalism over opulence any day of the week.

This random combination of images helps me understand why. I love how a warm, textured minimalism brings the important stuff into focus. In these cases, nondescript backgrounds let the vivid, living colors of the blooms seem illuminated. Without clutter, I can truly let my mind rest...and when my mind rests, it's amazing how creativity and mindfulness materialize without forcing or anxiety.

I assume that your tastes might be similar if you're a regular reader. So what do you think draws you to these kinds of spaces? Has your taste evolved over the years? Conversely, if you love more exuberant interiors, how do they positively impact your mindset?

I woke up this past Sunday morning, super-jazzed to head to my farmer's market and pick out a cute little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. Unfortunately, those trees had sold out by 9am, leaving me tree-less for the second week of December. As I walked, disappointed, out of the market, I happened to pass by a stall selling gorgeous paperwhite bulbs--the green stalks just beginning to shoot out of the bulbs atop a rockbed.

I thought about how nice it would be to fore-go a gravity-challenged and fussy tree (not to mention the post-tree vacuuming session that never picks up all of the needles). So, paperwhites it is this year, and I haven't regretted it for a second.

That's why I especially love this photo from Martha Stewart Living, with a giant urn of paperwhites standing in place of a grand tree, presents below and a simple garland overhead.

I think we can all agree that one of the unavoidable downsides of winter is the relentless, dry heat that churns out of our radiators and vents. While I am, of course, very grateful to be greeted by warmth after a brisk walk outside, my hair and skin are far less enthused. I'm sure many of you can relate -- itchy, red skin and dull hair --Ugh!

In addition to winterizing my skin care routine, one of my favorite tips is to break out the humidifier and add a few drops of an essential oil like lavender or sandalwood to the usual saltwater mix. Within minutes your home will be filled with kind, moist air and an invigorating scent that is infinitely better-smelling and better-for-you than artificial air fresheners. If you're worried about the look of an ugly humidifier cluttering your place, I bet you'll love these design-friendly models from Middle Colors. So clever!

A Recipe for Holiday Cheer

We all know the feeling. Thanksgiving is over and you're already exhausted. The shops have been playing Christmas carols since Halloween and your bank account is not prepared in the least for the onslaught of holiday gift-giving.

Sometimes, it's a little tough to feel the holiday cheer! The only way I'm able to stop dragging my heels in the snow, is the little ritual posted above. At some point in the week after Thanksgiving, I try to refocus my intention for the season -- to surround myself with Nostalgia, Family and Simplicity.

To focus more on good memories and good food, than on anxious little worries. To remind family and friends that I'm thinking of them and to make new memories (ideally with food!). Finally, I'm learning the discipline to avoid the tendency to go off the deep end into frenzied materialism, and instead focus on luxury through simplicity. Few "things", high quality, more experiences.

The last point has always been a tough one for me. I used to dive into the season with a wish list a mile long, with no regard for space in my apartment or my life. I'd buy all sorts of wasteful decorations that had to be thrown out after the holidays or stashed under my bed.

This year, I'm finally learning to let go a bit. I'm fortunate to not need much. Decorations are limited to a fabulous holiday scent, a simple wreath, lots of candlelight and a small, real, tree decked out in vintage German ornaments that I've collected with my mom.

So enough about me. What are your intentions for the holidays? Do you have any rituals to bring out your excitement for the season?

I'm as big of fan of the traditional Thanksgiving as anybody -- a New England farmhouse, a crackling fire, a sturdy meal with all of the fixings. But this year, I'm loving something a little different; a glamorous Thanksgiving with a different kind of warmth -- decadent gilt, sky-high meringue, golden velvet and a glimmering table setting.

{Cinema} Melancholia Prologue

Several weeks ago I watched Melancholia, which was nominated for the Palm D'Or at Cannes. I can strongly caution that it is not a film for everyone -- it is dark, slow-paced and sad. Think of it as a very beautiful movie about the end of the world.

I know a movie has really struck a chord when I'm still thinking of it weeks later. It begins with the prologue above, a sequence of almost living paintings set to the Tristan and Isolde Prelude by Richard Wagner. I think it's worth playing for the music alone, but as design lovers I thought you might enjoy as well.

This time of year, nobody does cozy like D. Porthault linens. Made in France, but with a distinctly English sensibility, they're best enjoyed slightly rumpled, with a cuppa and a Sunday paper strewn about.

I've had the Coeurs pattern on my wishlist for years, but don't think it would make it past the boyfriend veto. I guess I'll be saving the for my imaginary guest room!

The Perfectly Imperfect Home

Last night, Room & Board DC hosted former Domino editor (and current WSJ Off Duty editor) Deborah Needleman, in town to sign copies of her new book The Perfectly Imperfect Home.

It should go without saying that I was thrilled to meet Needleman. Without Domino, I'm not sure I ever would have felt as connected to, or passionate about design as I do today. As twee as this sounds, reading Domino as a dorm-bound college student gave me hope for a chic, futon-less future -- and one that could actually be achieved before becoming a billion-dollar scratch-off winner (it could totally happen you guys!).

After an impromptu dinner down the street at Cork, I scurried home to read the book. I was not disappointed. It's a substantial 200+ pages of practical and charming advice from Needleman, paired with Virginia Johnson illustrations of legendary rooms, many originally made famous in Domino.

P.S. If turning me into a design aficionado, isn't enough to make you trust this woman's taste, check out the pictures of Needleman's Garrison, NY home below. I die.

October may just be one of my favorite months. I love strolling through my neighborhood checking out townhomes decked out in Halloween splendor, the feel of warm sun through a thick sweater, crunchy leaves underfoot, and most of all, the scent of fireplace smoke cutting through crisp air. Seeing stacked logs outside a home is always such a welcoming sign -- so much so that I've considered buying logs as decor, despite not having a fireplace (real or fake).

Fortunately, I came to my senses, realizing that this plan sounded COMPLETELY INSANE considering my 500 sq foot apt. So for now, join me in drooling over some of my favorite images of stacked logs indoors.

The funny thing about blogging for nearly three years is that, at a certain point, the archives start to give away the funny little patterns you fall into season after season. Lately, I've been noticing just how profoundly those seasons affect my style. The basics are always the same -- comfort, clean lines, monochrome -- but the overall feeling of the homes I feature seems to change in some subtle way.

As we enter into fall, I find myself leaning towards more traditional homes and furnishings bathed in golden and shadowy autumnal light, heavy fabrics and a sense of history. All the better if there's a fireplace.

However, the other funny thing about blogging for nearly three years is knowing you are far from the only one who has these stylistic quirks and inconsistencies! So tell me, what interiors do you crave by the time October rolls around?

Somehow, some way September is coming to an end. Life is flying by at lightning speed, and certainly full of challenges -- but the good, wisdom-building kind. I have to admit that I've been feeling a bit uninspired by interiors lately. Sure, there's lots of drop dead gorgeous homes out there, but not enough new and accessible ideas. That's why I was thrilled to come across this fashion-y spread in Swedish interiors mag Skona Hem. So many fantastic ideas to steal -- the industrial coat rack in the entry, a big basket filled with all of those frames you can't find a spot for, the mix of black & white fashion shots with lush paintings, and the brilliant oversized "string lights" as task lighting. I die.

A Late August Bouquet

I was passing through the stalls of my local farmer's market yesterday, when the most amazing scent caught my attention. Tuberose -- stalks of it -- for sale at the flower stall. I filled out the rest of the bouquet with delicate euphorbia, Lace-cap hydrangeas and thistle and placed the bouquet near an open window so the breeze could carry the scent through my apartment. Perfect for the waning summer days...
